Prospect- 2013 MLB Draft: AL East

2013 MLB Draft: American League East Summary and Reviewhttp://0rz.tw/0uoCRBaltimore Orioles1-22) Hunter Harvey, RHP, Bandys HS, Catawba, NC1S-37) Josh Hart, OF, Parkview HS, Lilburn, GA2-61) Chance Sisco, C, Temescal Canyon HS, Lake Elsinore, CA3-98) Stephen Tarpley, LHP, Scottsdale CC4-129) Jonah Heim, C, Amherst HS, NY5-159) Travis Seabrooke, LHP, Crestwood HS, North Monaghan, ONTOthers of interest: 7) Drew Dosch, 3B, Youngstown State; 11) Steven Brault,LHP, Regis; 14) Mike Yastrzemski, OF, Vanderbilt; 18) Reed Reilly, RHP, CalPolyCOMMENT: There was a general assumption among mock drafters that the Oriolesmight look towards college talent close to the majors, but that wasn't thecase: this was all about upside, beginning with hard-throwing Harvey and linedrive-hitting Hart. Sisco and Heim are athletic but raw types who coulddevelop into regular catchers, or nothing. Tarpley can hit 93-94 MPH;Seabrooke is a cold-weather guy who is behind that but is highly projectable.Tarpley is an interesting case: he's got a load of talent, but is dogged byvery persistent doubts about his makeup. The Orioles switched to polishedcollege players in subsequent rounds, but the first five will make, or break, this class.Boston Red Sox1-7) Trey Ball, LHP, New Castle HS, Indiana2-45) Teddy Stankiewicz, RHP, Seminole State JC OK3-81) Jonathan Denney, C, Yukon HS, OK4-113) Myles Smith, LHP, Lee University5-143) Corey Littrell, LHP, KentuckyOthers of interest: 6) Jordon Austin, OF, Florida HS; 8) Forrestt Allday, OF,Central Arkansas; 13) Jordan Sheffield, RHP, Tennessee HS; 14) Jake Romanski,C, San Diego State; 16) Jalen Williams, RHP, Louisiana HS; 22) Ryan Boldt,OF, Minnesota HSCOMMENT: I like this one a lot: Ball is super-athletic and projectable andhas more polish than is often assumed. Both Stankiewicz and Denney would havebeen first-round picks in some draft classes, so getting all three of theseguys, assuming Denny will sign, is a coup. Smith throws quite hard; Littrelldoesn't but has superior command. Cheap but interesting college picks insubsequent rounds will hopefully enable the money to work out at the top. Inthe old days, the Red Sox would have showered cash on guys like Sheffield,Williams, or Boldt. The new draft rules make that much more difficult, buteven without the overslot options I think the Red Sox did well.New York Yankees1-26) Eric Jagielo, 3B, Notre Dame1-32) Aaron Judge, OF, Fresno State1-33) Ian Clarkin, LHP, Madison HS, San Diego, CA2-66) Gosuke Katoh, 2B, Rancho Bernardo HS, CA3-103) Michael O'Neill, OF, Michigan4-134) Tyler Wade, SS, Murieta Valley HS, CA5-164) David Palladino, RHP, Howard JCOthers of interest: 7) Nick Rumbelo, RHP; LSU; 8) Brandon Thomas, OF, GeorgiaTech; 9) Connor Kendrick, LHP, Auburn; 26) Cal Quantrill, RHP, Canada HS.COMMENT: Three picks at the top and I think they handled it well: a strongpower college bat, a college outfielder with unusual upside (though also somerisk), and one of the better high school arms available. After that I'm notsure what to think, not having a good feel for Katoh or Wade. O'Neill hasgood tools but is still erratic about using them despite a collegebackground. As they often do, the Yankees drafted numerous potential reliefarms from the college ranks, but the three guys at the top are the criticalfactors here.Tampa Bay Rays1-21) Nick Ciuffo, C, Lexington HS, SC1-29) Ryne Stanek, RHP, Arkansas2-60) Riley Unroe, SS, Desert Ridge HS, Mesa, AZ3-97) Thomas Milone, OF, Masuk HS, Monroe, CT4-128) Kean Wong, 2B, Waiakea HS, Hilo, HI5-158) Johnny Field, 2B, ArizonaOthers of interest: 7) Ty Young, 2B, Louisville; 8) Roel Ramirez, RHP, TexasHS; 11) Hunter Lockwood, OF, Weatherford JC; 18) Julian Ridings, OF, WesternCarolinaCOMMENT: Ciuffo has a balanced set of offensive and defensive skills and waswidely-rumored to be on the Rays short list, so his selection was nosurprise. It was a surprise that Stanek fell this far, but some teams wereapparently worried about his mechanics and durability. Still, getting him at29 is a good value. Unroe is a switch-hitter with speed, athleticism, excellent makeup, and is one of the youngest players in this class, notturning 18 until November. Milone draws wildly mixed reviews depending on whois doing the reviewing: some really love his tools, others are less sanguine. His cold-weather background might give him an unusual development curve. Wongis considered more advanced than his brother Kolten at the same age. Otherthan Stanek, this draft will take time to bear fruit.Toronto Blue Jays1-10) Phil Bickford, RHP, Oaks Christian HS, Westlake Village, CA2-47) Clinton Hollon, RHP, Woodford County HS, Versailles, KY3-83) Patrick Murphy, RHP, Hamilton HS, Chandler, AZ4-115) Evan Smith, LHP, Montgomery HS, Semmes, AL5-145) Daniel Lietz, LHP, Heartland CC ILOthers of interest: 6) Matt Boyd, LHP, Oregon State; 7) Conner Greene, RHP,California HS; 8) Kendall Graveman, RHP, Mississippi State; 11) Jake Brentz,LHP, Missouri HS; 14) L.B. Danztler, 1B, South Carolina; 17) Eric Lauer, LHP,Ohio HS; 30) Rowdy Tellez, 1B, California HS; 36) David Harris, SS, SouthernArkansasCOMMENT: The good news: Bickford throws extremely hard and could be an ace ifhis secondary pitches come around. The bad news: he'll be very expensive tosign, and the Jays dealt with this by ratcheting down the bonus levels withsubsequent picks, Hollon and Smith being very raw and Murphy being a TommyJohn recovery guy. Pitching was strongly emphasized. Lietz in the fifth roundcould be a significant sleeper. There were some interesting Cardinalesqueperformance picks in later rounds to fill out roster slots, including collegesuccess story Dantzler and 36th round pick David Harris, a shortstop fromSouthern Arkansas who led NCAA Division II in total bases.--*Athletic frame.*High baseball IQ. Xander*Smooth, fluid swing. Bogaerts*Elite batspeed. #01*Strong and explosive hands.*Above-average-to-better power ceiling, potential 30 home run bat.--

Prospect- 2013 MLB Draft: AL Central

2013 MLB Draft: American League Central Summary and Reviewhttp://0rz.tw/IMUrbChicago White Sox1-17) Tim Anderson, SS, East Central Mississippi CC2-55) Tyler Danish, RHP, Durant HS, Plant City, FL3-91) Jacob May, OF, Coastal Carolina4-123) Andrew Mitchell, RHP, Texas Christian5-153) Thaddius Lory, RHP, Spring HS, Spring TXOthers of interest: 7) Trey Michalczewski, 3B, Oklahoma HS; 8) ChrisFreudenberg, LHP, South Mountain CC; 14) Tyler Barnette, RHP, Charlotte; 15)Andrew Wheeler, LHP, Texas TechCOMMENT: The shortage of infielders in this draft made the toolsy Andersonvery attractive to numerous teams, but the White Sox got there first. Danishwas one of the most successful high school pitchers in the class, but unusualmechanics and his 6-foot height kept him from going in the first round. Mayis a fast switch-hitter who could be a good leadoff man if he showssufficient patience, which is questionable. Mitchell drew notice as apossible late first-round pick and is a steal in the fourth. Pitchingdominated much of the draft before the Sox switched over to college orgtypes, with Oklahoma prep Michalczewski the main exception due to his youthand solid hitting skills. Much rides on Anderson, Danish, and Mitchell.Cleveland Indians1-5) Clint Frazier, OF, Loganville HS, Loganville, GA3-79) Dace Kime, RHP, Louisville4-111) Kyle Crockett, LHP, Virginia5-141) Sean Brady, LHP, Baker HS, Cape Coral, FL6-171) Casey Shane, RHP, Centennial HS, Burleson, TXOthers of interest: 7) Kenny Matthews, LHP, Riverside CC; 8) Trevor Frank,RHP, UC Riverside; 9) Thomas Pannone, LHP, JC of Southern Nevada; 11) AdamPlutko, RHP, UCLA; 13) Sicnarf Loopstok, C, Western Oklahoma State JC; 14)Silento Sayles, OF, Mississippi HSCOMMENT: I love Clint Frazier's bat speed: his power potential is enormous;he also runs well and nobody in this draft hustles more than he does. He'sgot some risk too, but he's a sound pick at fifth overall. After that theIndians focused on pitching, mixing college, junior college, and high schoolarms. Kime is a potential fourth starter; Shane has an unusual amount ofupside for a sixth round pick. 13th round pick Lopstook and 14th round pickSayles are additional upside guys who need to be tracked closely. A lot rideson Frazier but the Indians did stock up their minor league pitching.Detroit Tigers1-20) Jonathan Crawford, RHP, Florida1S-39) Corey Knebel, RHP, Texas2-58) Kevin Ziomek, LHP, Vanderbilt3-94) Jeff Thompson, RHP, Louisville4-126) Austin Kubitza, RHP, Rice5-156) Buck Farmer, RHP, Georgia TechOthers of interest: 6) Calvin Drummond, RHP, Arizona Christian; 7) ConnorHarrell, OF, Vanderbilt; 14) Ben Verlander, OF, Old Dominion; 15) RaphRhymes, OF, LSU; 23) Tyler Alexander, LHP; Texas HS; 35) A.J. Puk, LHP, IowaHSCOMMENT: This is like a whos-who list of prominent college pitchers. Crawforddidn't live up to expectations this spring and Knebel got into trouble forsharing his urine with a teammate trying to dodge a drug test. Both couldstill be very effective relievers who reach the majors quickly. Ziomek,Thompson, and Farmer were very successful in college but project as fourthstarters. Kubitza also has an admirable performance record but the history ofRice pitchers and his own velocity decline over the last two years is notencouraging. The lack of upside position players is particularly noticeable, but it is clear that the Tigers were looking for quick, low-risk pitchinghelp rather than loud tools.Kansas City Royals1-8) Hunter Dozier, SS, Stephen F. Austin State1S-34) Sean Manaea, LHP, Indiana State2-46) Cody Reed, LHP, Northwest Mississippi CC3-82) Carter Hope, RHP, The Woodlands HS, TX4-114) Zane Evans, C, Georgia Tech5-144) Amalani Fukofuka, OF, Logan HS, Union City, CAOthers of interest: 6) Luke Farrell, RHP, Northwestern; 11) Xavier Fernandez,C, Puerto Rico HS; 15) Dominique Taylor, OF, UC IrvineCOMMENT: Dozier was the first real surprise of the first round, but theRoyals saved some money with him that can be applied to Manaea, who fell froma spot at the top of the draft down to the competitive balance round due tohip and shoulder problems. If he regains his health, that's one hell of aone/two punch since there is nothing wrong with Dozier. Reed and Hope aredevelopment projects but both have the ability to be major league starters, with hard-throwing Reed having more upside. Evans has a power bat and astrong throwing arm that can work on the mound if he doesn't hit enough. Therest of the group is relatively undistinguished although Farrell's polishcould help him rise quickly as a fifth starter type. Getting both Dozier andManaea is the key though.Minnesota Twins1-4) Kohl Stewart, RHP, St. Pius X HS, Houston, TX2-43) Ryan Eades, RHP, Louisiana State3-78) Stuart Turner, C, Mississippi4-110) Stephen Gonsalves, LHP, Cathedral Catholic HS, San Diego, CA5-140) Aaron Slegers, RHP, IndianaOthers of interest: 6) Brian Navaretto, C, Florida HS; 8) Dustin DeMuth, 3B,Indiana; 9) Mitchell Garver, C, New Mexico; 11) Nelson Molina, SS, PuertoRico HS; 12) Ethan Mildren,RHP, Pittsburgh; 13) Brandon Peterson, RHP,Wichita State.COMMENT: Stewart was the best high school pitcher in the draft class and apotential ace, though he's not quite in the Jose Fernandez or Dylan Bundycategory. The Twins took few chances with their other picks. One exception issixth-rounder Brian Navaretto, who has the tools to be a regular major leaguecatcher but will need considerable refinement. Eades has the look of aninning-eater; Turner and Garver add catching depth to a system looking aheadfor someone to help Joe Mauer. Turner's glove is quite good but it isuncertain how much he'll hit. Gonsalves got first-round buzz last fall butdidn't live up to his potential this spring. Puerto Rican infielder NelsonMolina has an excellent glove but needs help with his hitting.--*Athletic frame.*High baseball IQ. Xander*Smooth, fluid swing. Bogaerts*Elite batspeed. #01*Strong and explosive hands.*Above-average-to-better power ceiling, potential 30 home run bat.--

Prospect- 2013 MLB Draft: AL West

2013 MLB Draft: American League West Summary and Reviewhttp://0rz.tw/2yruiHouston Astros1-1) Mark Appel, RHP, Stanford2-40) Andrew Thurman, RHP, UC Irvine3-74) Kent Emanuel, LHP, North Carolina4-107) Conrad Gregor, 1B, VanderbiltOthers of interest: 5) Tony Kemp, 2B, Vanderbilt; 6) Jake Nottingham, C;California HS; 7) James Ramsay, OF, South Florida; 29) Randall Fant, LHP,Arkansas:COMMENT: The Astros made the obvious and logical choice at the top of thedraft by selecting Appel. After that, they filled in mostly with collegeplayers, which is logical given the amount of money it could take to signAppel. More goes into this than going just for pure upside; you have to lookat the money, too; the Astros know what it will take to get Appel signed andhad to run their draft accordingly. Thurman and Emanuel are possible fourthstarters who might not need long in the minors. The Astros picked a lot ofcollege players in middle and later rounds, which is a strategy that theCardinals have used to great effect in building system depth. One exceptionis power-hitting Jake Nottingham, possibly a steal in the sixth round ifeverything comes together.Los Angeles Angels2-59) Hunter Green, LHP, Warren East HS, Bowling Green, Kentucky3-95) Keynan Middleton, RHP, Lane Community College4-127) Eliot Morris, RHP, Pierce Junior College5-157) Kyle McGowin, RHP, Savannah StateOthers of interest: 6) Harrison Cooney, RHP, Florida Gulf Coast; 9) StephenMcGee, C, Florida State; 10) Grant Gordon, RHP, Missouri State; 11) JonahWesely, LHP; California HSCOMMENT: With no first-round pick the Angels needed to be creative and Ithink they did a good job here, grabbing a top 30 quality prospect withHunter Green in the second round, then two lively junior college arms whowill need some development work but have considerable upside. McGowin,Cooney, Gordon, and 7th round pick Garrett Nus and 8th round pick Nate Smithall add decent enough arms to a thin farm system. There isn't much inposition talent, with walk machine Stephen McGee being the best of the lot. This isn't a spectacular group, but given their bonus pool of just$2,998,200, I think the Angels did a reasonable job of adding organizationaldepth to the system.Oakland Athletics1-24) Billy McKinney, OF, Plano West HS, Plano, TX2-63) Dillon Overton, LHP, Oklahoma2S-71) Chad Pinder, SS, Virginia Tech3-100) Ryon Healy, 1B, Oregon3S-106) Chris Kohler, LHP, Los Osos HS, Rancho Cucamonga, CA4-131) Dylan Covey, RHP, San Diego5-161) Bobby Wahl, RHP, MississippiOthers of interest: 6) Kyle Finnegan, RHP, Texas State; 7) Dustin Driver,RHP, Washington HS; 8) Tyler Marincov, OF, North Florida; 12) Dakota Freese,RHP, Des Moines Area CC: 19) A.J. Vanegas, RHP, StanfordCOMMENT: This looks very good to me, featuring a diverse mix of upside andvalue though they'll have to get creative with the money if they want to signDriver away from UCLA. McKinney is one of the most polished high schoolhitters in recent memory. Overton, Pinder, Healy, and Marincov were allsuccess stories in college who could be solid role players. Covey, who hasalready signed, is a former first round pick who struggled for San Diego butmight thrive in pro ball. Wahl fell unexpectedly but the talent that made hima projected first round pick in February is still there; he's awesome in thefifth round if they can make the money work. Lottery ticket Freese can hit 95and has a big-bending curveball, but command problems and makeup concernsdropped him down. He'll be interesting to follow at least. Overall, I likewhat Oakland did even if they can't sign Driver. (NOTE: According to Twitter,Driver signed a few minutes before I posted this article. No word on $$$).Seattle Mariners1-12) D.J. Peterson, 3B, New Mexico2-49) Austin Wilson, OF, Stanford3-85) Tyler O'Neill, OF-C, Garibaldi SS, Maple Ridge, BC4-117) Ryan Horstman, LHP, St. John's5-147) Jack Reinheimer, SS, East CarolinaOthers of interest: 6) Corey Simpson, OF, Texas HS; 12) Justin Seager, 1B,Charlotte; 29) Chantz Mack, OF, University of Miami-Florida.COMMENT: Peterson had a thunderous college campaign and most sources thinkhis bat will move quickly, although not everyone thinks he can remain atthird base. Austin Wilson has outstanding athletic gifts but never fullylived up to expectations in college; that may or may not change in pro ball, but the tools for stardom are there if he can tap them. O'Neill ishighly-respected as a hitter but they'll be more pressure on his bat as anoutfielder than as a catcher. College choices with modest tools but goodtrack records fill out many slots, perhaps freeing up enough money to assurethat power-hitting 6th rounder Simpson passes up the University of Houston.29th round college senior Chantz Mack was the leading Hurricane hitter thisspring and led the club in steals and walks, but has never excited talentevaluators with a 5-11, 205 build.Texas Rangers1-23) Alex Gonzalez, RHP, Oral Roberts1-30) Travis Demeritte, SS, Winder-Barrow HS, Winder, Georgia2-62) Akeem Bostick, RHP, West Florence HS, South Carolina3-99) David Ledbetter, RHP, Cedarville College4-130) Isiah Kiner-Falefa, SS, Mid-Pacific Institute5-160) Joe Jackson, C, The CitadelOthers of interest: 6) Sam Wolff, RHP, New Mexico; 7) Nick Gardenwine, RHP,Kaskaskia CC; 12) Derek Thompson, LHP, John A. Logan JC; 19) Ryan Ledbetter,RHP, Cedarville College; 27) Sherman LaCrus, C, Western Oklahoma State JCCOMMENT: I have to like this class just because of the cool names, butthere's considerable talent here too. Gonzalez is potentially a steal at 24thoverall and could be in the majors very quickly. Demeritte has one of thebest bats in the high school class, at least for power potential, though hisultimate position is uncertain. Bostick is a huge upside play, high risk, high reward. "Mid-Pacific Institute" sounds like a subsidiary of the HansoFoundation, Weyland-Yutani, or North Central Positronics, althoughKiner-Falefa is less likely to destroy the world and more likely to developinto a solid defender with an okay bat. Jackson (great-great-great nephew ofShoeless Joe) has a good glove and hit the snot out of the ball this year.Woolf has a very live arm, and both Illinois junior college picks bear closewatching. Overall I think this is well done.--*Athletic frame.*High baseball IQ. Xander*Smooth, fluid swing. Bogaerts*Elite batspeed. #01*Strong and explosive hands.*Above-average-to-better power ceiling, potential 30 home run bat.--

Prospect- 2013 MLB Draft: NL East

2013 MLB Draft: National League East Summary and Reviewhttp://0rz.tw/1qijEAtlanta Braves1-31) Jason Hursh, RHP, Oklahoma State2-65) Victor Caratini, C, Miami Dade JC3-102) Carlos Salazar, RHP, Kerman HS, CA4-133) Tanner Murphy, C, Maiden HS, MO5-163) Mikey Reynolds, SS, Texas A&MOthers of interest: 6) Stephen Janas, RHP, Kennesaw State; 8) Kyle Wren, OF,Georgia Tech; 9) Dylan Manwaring, 3B, New York HS; 13) Joseph Odom, C,Huntingdon College; 16) Michael Swanner, RHP, PepperdineCOMMENT: Hursh has impressive arm strength but opinions are mixed aboutwhether he starts or relieves in the long run. Caratini can hit and could endup at third base if catching doesn't work out. Salazar is quite raw but 95MPH fastballs are nice to find in the third round. Murphy is very raw;Reynolds is a future utilityman with some on-base ability but little power.Kyle Wren is a legit 8-10 round pick on talent, but it does look kind ofweird for a GM to draft his own kid. Odom was a small college star. Thisclass should be pretty cheap to sign but there isn't huge upside here.Miami Marlins1-6) Colin Moran, 3B, North Carolina1S-35) Matt Krook, LHP, St. Ignatius HS, San Francisco, CA2-44) Trevor Williams, RHP, Arizona State2S-73) Colby Suggs, RHP, Arkansas3-80) Ben DeLuzio, SS, The First Academy, Orlando, FL4-112) K. J. Woods, OF, Fort Mill HS, SC5-142) Chad Wallach, C, Cal State FullertonOthers of interest: 7) Justin Bohn, SS, Feather River JC; 11) Coco Johnson,OF, Louisville; 36) Chandler Eden, RHP, California HSCOMMENT: This is more interesting than Atlanta's draft, with a solid mixtureof advanced college players like Moran and Suggs, combined with the long-termhigh school investments of Krook, DeLuzio, and Woods. Moran won't need longin the minors and just needs to figure out where he fits with the glove.Williams was disappointing this spring but a year ago was seen as first-roundmaterial, so there is at least the potential for him to improve and be asteal. DeLuzio and Woods are toolsy but raw and will take time, as will leftyMatt Krook. Justin Bohn has speed, athleticism, and defense. Later rounds sawa large number of organization-type picks, but some of them are quiteinteresting, including speedy Johnson. Overall, I like the diversity of thisclass.New York Mets1-11) Dominic Smith, 1B, Serra HS, Gardena, CA2-48) Andrew Church, RHP, Basic HS, Henderson, NV3-76) Ivan Wilson, OF, Ruston HS, LA3-84) Casey Meisner, RHP, Cypress Woods HS, Cypress, TX4-116) L.J. Mazzilli, 2B, Connecticut5-146) Jared King, OF, Kansas StateOthers of interest: 7) Matt Oberste, 1B, Oklahoma; 8) Ricky Knapp, RHP,Florida Gulf Coast; 9) Patric Biondi, OF, Michigan; 10) Luis Guillorme, SS,Florida HS; 15) Colton Plaia, C, Loyola MarymountCOMMENT: Another mixed class, with upside early then shifting gears to morepolished college guys. Smith has the bat for first base and could win goldgloves too. Church and Meisner are athletic, projectable types who will needpatient development; Wilson is a strong athlete who will need similarperseverance. Bloodlined Mazzilli, switch-hitting King, power hitter Oberste,strike-throwing Knapp, and speedy Biondi are all solid college choices intheir rounds who provide depth to the system; all have a chance to exceedexpectations. There is risk at the top but balance as well.Philadelphia Phillies1-16) J.P. Crawford, SS, Lakewood HS, CA2-53) Andrew Knapp, C, University of California3-89) Cord Sandberg, OF, Manatee HS, Bradenton, FL3-96) Jan Hernandez, SS, Beltran Academy, Puerto Rico4-121) Jake Sweaney, C, Garces Memorial HS, Bakersfield, CA5-151) Ben Wetzler, LHP, Oregon StateOthers of interest: 7) Trey Williams, 3B, JC of the Canyons; 8) Justin Parr,OF, Illinois; 11) Denton Keys, LHP, Colorado HS; 13) Joey Martarano, 3B,Idaho HS; 21) Mark Meadors, RHP, Cowley County CC; 29) Cavan Biggio, INF,Texas HS; 32) Tyler Viza, RHP, Arizona HSCOMMENT: The Phillies are well-known for drafting lots of tools players, butthey also have the ability to find Tyler Cloyd-like college guys who end upcontributing in the majors when people don't expect them too. This draftfollows that pattern. Crawford, Sandberg, and Hernandez were all consideredpotential first-round picks at some point in the last 12 months: to snap upall three of them is quite a coup. Knapp, for some reason that I don'tunderstand, didn't get as much attention as he deserved in college but he canhit and has at least a chance to stick at catcher. Sweaney is raw and willneed time to develop, particularly on defense, but he has upper-levelpotential. Wetzler and Parr were very successful in college and could be"sneak up on us" types, as were several later picks, particularly 15th round3B Logan Pierce from Troy University. Williams has enormous power and unusualupside for a seventh rounder. A large group of college arms was selected inthe later rounds.Washington Nationals2-68) Jake Jonahsen, RHP, Dallas Baptist3-105) Drew Ward, 3B, Leedey HS, OK4-136) Nic Pivetta, RHP, New Mexico JC5-166) Austin Voth, RHP, Washington6-196) Cody Gunter, 3B, Grayson County CCOthers of interest: 7) Jim Yezzo, 1B, Delaware; 8) David Napoli, LHP, Tulane;26) Garrett Hampson, SS, Nevada HS; 35) Lukas Shiraldi, RHP, Navarro JCCOMMENT: With no first round pick and a small bonus pool, the Nationals wentwith some raw gambles early. Johansen has already signed and can hit 99 MPH,but he was ineffective in college and needs a lot of development work withhis secondary pitches. Ward has enormous power but his defense is limited andhe played substandard competition in high school, making it tough for scoutsto get a good read on him. Pivetta is big and throws hard; it can be easy tooverlook junior college guys but he has the potential to surprise. Voth wasan effective college pitcher with a solid fastball, a cutter, and goodcontrol. Yezzo destroyed NCAA pitching this spring but his lack ofathleticism knocked him down draft boards. Hampson has second round abilitybut is going to be tough to get away from Long Beach State.-- "HARD WORK BEATS TALENT WHEN TALENT FAILS TO WORK HARD."--
